“This has been a long and difficult shoot, fraught by many problems. But the one thing that kept me going, through it all, was the certain knowledge that one day I would drive out the gate of Pinewood and never come back, and that you sorry bastards would still be here.” – James Cameron, on [...]

This movie was pure insanity. It’s two and a half unrelenting hours of explosions, robots and boobs. I would say it’s equally divided between moments of sheer brilliance, and WTF moments. If you’ve seen the first movie, then you have a good idea of what to expect, but crank it up a notch. This movie [...]

Have I mentioned that I am extremely excited about the new Star Trek movie? Because I am. Extremely. (The illustration is by the lovely and talented Kate Beaton, and you should definitely go look at everything she has done because it is awesome.)

Best. Metafilter Thread. Ever. A simple theory is mentioned, and then it keeps getting expanding, over and over, in the comments. They’re all worth reading, but I’ve reproduced the most amazing bits here. My favorite thought-piece about Ferris Bueller is the “Fight Club” theory, in which Ferris Bueller, the person, is just a figment of [...]

Somehow, my review for Zach and Miri slipped through the cracks, and now it’s been so long that it’s not really worth writing. So I’ll just throw up a quick mention that Annie and I absolutely loved it, and thought it was a great return to form for Kevin Smith.

Watchmen is great on two levels. If you’ve never read the comic (like Annie), it stands completely on its own as an excellent action movie with a fantastic plot. However, if you’ve read the comic, it’s more like a love letter. Certainly, there are deviations, but Snyder has a good feel for dropping the bits [...]

“When you read the book, it’s like, ‘Edward Cullen was so beautiful I creamed myself.’ I mean, every line is like that. He’s the most ridiculous person who’s so amazing at everything. I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn’t do that. And the more I read the script, [...]

”In my movie, Superman doesn’t care about humanity, Batman can’t get it up, and the bad guy wants world peace.” – Zack Snyder, discussing his adaptation of Watchmen

The new dashboard is really slick. The entire thing has been overhauled, to the point where it feels like a brand new console, rather than just a software upgrade. At first, it’s a little confusing if you’re used to the “blades” interface, because everything has been moved around and reorganized, but I think the new [...]

If you haven’t seen Casino Royale yet, go see it before you see this one. Unlike Bond movies in the past, which were all stand-alone, this is a true sequel to the first movie. It opens maybe an hour after the finale of Casino Royale, and jumps right into the action. Continuing their general theme [...]

“The absolute worst thing in Matrix III was when Keanu gets to the virtual office of the Big Computer Mind, and he meets, like, a tweedy professor with a white beard. Ugh! At the very least it should have been a fat hacker in a T-shirt, preferably high on pineal extract.” – Rudy Rucker

How about a one-word review? Disappointing. The summary says “Batman takes on Deadshot, Killer Croc and other deadly foes in six anime-inspired short films.” The key words there are anime-inspired. This movie desperately wanted to be The Animatrix, but it failed because they got American writers and animators. The six shorts all have different styles, [...]

“If you’re good at something, never do it for free.” – The Joker, in The Dark Knight

I’m not going to waste any of your time. Just go see this movie as soon as possible. It is hilarious, and you will love it. I know the trailers make it look kind of stupid, but trust me, Annie and I were laughing so hard it hurt.

Lucas recently spoke out against companies altering old films and colorizing black and white features; he claimed that, as a proponent of history, viewers should be able to appreciate a film as it was originally released. “I am very concerned about our national heritage, and I am very concerned that the films that I watched [...]

Last night, KT and I rented the first X-Files movie so we could get caught up for the sequel. Given that it came out ten years ago, I wasn’t sure how well it would hold up, but it was fun, and now I feel like I’ve got enough of the storyline back in my head [...]

Wow. I expected this to be like most sequels: good, but not quite living up to the original. I was completely blown away. It’s pretty long (two and a half hours) but it actually uses that time well, and the story is great — dealing with the logical consequences of Batman’s actions. My favorite thing [...]

“Oh, quit whining. We’re supposed to be surprised that there’s greenscreening in a Zack Snyder movie? Did you even see 300? I think that title actually referred to the number of animators they had rendering CGI cliff faces.” – MightyGodKing and friends discussing the Watchmen trailer

Since I’d never watched the TV show, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the movie. On the other hand, I figured it’s Steve Carell doing a slapstick spy movie, which is right up my alley. Thankfully, it turns out to be really funny. Maxwell Smart is an analyst working for CONTROL, a top-secret spy [...]

Long story short, I thought it was great. Harrison Ford pulls off the “aging action hero” thing perfectly. Indy is a little rusty, but still just a likely to throw a punch as to recite obscure historical details from memory. Similarly, Shai LaBeouf, who I expected to find annoying, fills the role of “young punk [...]

If you’ve seen the trailer, then you’ve already got a taste of it, but basically this is a live-action cartoon. The visual effects and the super-saturated colors aren’t just in the racing scenes – the whole movie looks like a photoshop layout. To be honest, it kind of bothered me at first. Thankfully, the story [...]

Jon Favreau directing Iron Man and starring Robert Downey Jr. was all I needed to hear to get excited about this movie. When the trailer came out, it just raised my hopes even higher. His portrayal of Tony Stark as a self-centered alcoholic billionaire looked pitch-perfect — And I’m happy to say that the movie [...]

Since Zoe was born, Annie and I don’t get out to see movies together as often as we’d like, so when we do manage to swing it, we feel the need to pick something that demands the big screen. Last time, we saw Cloverfield, which was an easy decision. This time, we decided that Jumper [...]

Will Smith is Robert Neville, the only survivor of a plague that has killed 90% of humanity, and left the rest infected with a disease that turns them into vampire-like monsters. Neville was a military scientist studying the disease, which originated as a cure for cancer. Even as the rest of Manhattan rushes to evacuate, [...]

It’s funny, but when I first heard about this, I didn’t think it would be any good. Then someone pointed out to me that J.J. Abrams is the same guy who has kept us on the edge of our seats about the monster on Lost while barely showing us anything. Cloverfield is just as well-done. [...]
